Subject: [SEABIRD] Albatross and Petrel Conference (fwd)

Hi folks,

Thought that some of the people on the list might be interested in
the upcoming conference on pelagic seabirds. This one's in
Waikiki, so *I* certainly won't be able to attend. Perhaps some one
who is luckier than I am :-)

Please contact Beth Flint or Mark Rauzon about the conference, not
me.

Subject: [SEABIRD] Re: Albatross and Petrel Conference

Holiday Greetings!

As you may be aware, the Second International Conference on the biology and
conservation of albatross and other petrels will take palce in Waikiki,
Hawaii from 8-12 May, 2000. The agenda includes 3 days for presentation of
scientific papers and 2 days for workshops on fishery interactions hosted by
John Cooper and petrel and albatross habitat and population restoration
hosted by me.

I would like to invite those with specific information on the following
topics to consider attending the workshop or communicating relevant
information. We plan to cover:

-Rodent Contingency Planning-(ratspill) or how to prevent rodents from
hitching a ride to an island.
-Predator Eradication: what to do if predators appear on a island with
seabirds. Review successful examples of eradications and the techniques used;
We especially hope to document the effects of small rodents,i.e., mice and
Polynesian rats, on storm-petrels, to counter the perception that these
animals are not threatening to petrels.
-Explore restoration actions after eradications. Colony expansion, range
extension, via social attraction studies, both successes and failures,
cross-fostering experiments, especially with larger petrels and albatross
will be presented.

So if you're planing on attending, please bring any examples of from the
above menu and stop by the workshop or contact me with any data you wish to
share. For other conference details contact beth_flint at fws.gov
See you in Waikiki.
