Like many of the eastern WA counts, the Moscow (ID)/Pullman(WA) count was
plagued by moderate to strong winds all day although we were spared the
forecasted rain. In talking to the compiler, Dave Holick, it looks like
we'll be somewhere in the low to mid 50's where we had 61 last year. The
highlight was the PINE WARBLER which continues into its second week here
(and is being seen reliably pretty much every day) and in the same yard a
White-throated Sparrow. It looks like we broke all time records for Canada
Goose and Mallard and had a good show of winter finches w/ Red Crossbill,
Evening Grosbeak, and Common Redpoll in addition to the usuals. Also
notable for here were 2 Bald and 1 Golden Eagle, a Hooded Merganser, a
Green-winged Teal, 2 Barn and 1 N. Pygmy Owls, and probably a couple of
Blue Jays (at least CW). Other count week birds were Marsh Wren (impossible
to find in the howling gale on Saturday) and Long-eared Owl. Interesting to
note the drastic reduction in our Barn Owl count from 38 last year to 2
this year, presumably related to declining rodent populations (esp. Montane
Vole) noted in our area.

Thanks, Charles.
