Hello, this is the Audubon Society of Portland Rare Bird Report. This
recording was made Thursday December 23. If you have anything to add call
Harry Nehls at 233-3976.

The MOUNTAIN PLOVER that has been near the Dunes Overlook south of
Florence could not be found over the week-end.

Most coastal Christmas Counts taken during the week found one or more
OLDSQUAWS and above normal numbers of ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS and
TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS.

On December 22 a BARN SWALLOW was observed in Port Orford. Up to 8 SNOWY
EGRETS, 12 WHITE THROATED SPARROWS, 9 SWAMP SPARROWS, and a MOCKINGBIRD
were found on the Coos Bay count. A BROWN PELICAN seen December 16 was
not around on count day. On December 22 a LAYSAN ALBATROSS was found
standing in the parking lot of a Charleston fish factory. It apparently
came in on a fishing boat. It was released on the beach and flew out to
sea.

The Florence Count noted a SCRUB-JAY and 24 SNOWY PLOVERS. On December 21
a flock of 11 TUNDRA SWANS were on Yaquina Bay, and the next day 3
NIGHT-HERONS were observed at the pond near the entrance to the Oregon
Coast Aquarium.

The Tillamook Count recorded 3 EMPEROR GEESE, a BURROWING OWL, 2 SNOWY
PLOVERS, 22 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 2 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, a NASHVILLE
WARBLER, and a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW. SWAMP SPARROWS were missed on count
day, but 2 were seen the next day. On December 22 a TURKEY VULTURE was
near Tillamook.

An EMPEROR GOOSE and a LONG-EARED OWL were at the South Jetty of the
Columbia River December 18, but could not be found for the count the next
day. The Columbia Estuary Count did record 15 SCRUB-JAYS.

The Sauvie Island Count found the Scappoose CATTLE EGRET, a ROSS'S GOOSE,
a TRUMPETER SWAN, and a TREE SWALLOW at Ridgefield NWR. RED-SHOULDERED
HAWKS were noted on both sides of the river.

On December 19 an EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL was at Creekside Marsh in
Beaverton. A flock of 120 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS were there December 22.
A PALM WARBLER was seen December 19 in North Portland at the same spot
one wintered last year. It was found on the south side of the slough next
to the PP at L building on N.E. 33d Avenue, just south of Columbia Blvd. On
December 20 male EURASIAN WIGEONS were found at both Eastmoreland and
Westmoreland Parks in southeast Portland.

The December 18 Salem Count recorded a LARK SPARROW in Minto-Brown Park;
a CHIPPING SPARROW, and a SWAMP SPARROW. A possible LAZULI BUNTING came
to a Salem feeder December 19. On December 22 a CATTLE EGRET was observed
at a farm northeast of Salem.

An AMERICAN TREE SPARROW was found on the December 21 Corvallis Count. A
SPOTTED OWL found along Bellfountain Road near Finley NWR was also
recorded.

The COSTA'S HUMMINGBIRD is again wintering at a Grants Pass feeder, but
it was missed on Count day.

The COMMON REDPOLL flock continues to be seen at Black Butte Ranch near
Sisters. The town of Sisters is loaded with PINE SISKINS.

Thats it for this week.
