One of the **many** things I learned in Bud Anderson's hawk class is that the head shape of red-tailed and rough-legged hawks are different. The rough-legged hawk has a very rounded head: it looks like a tennis ball with a beak stuck on it. Start looking at buteo head shapes; with a little practice I think this is a very good field mark to use.
