Seven !!! of us went out today to brave the cold and the fog. And it was
foggy! We had a good first hour of birding, then things got pretty quiet for
quite a while. We couldn't even see the lake. The NW corner of the Pea Patch
had a few more things, and the Rowing Club was pretty good, but overall we had
a fairly hum-ho day.

Highlights included:

Common Goldeneye Many flying down the slough
Hooded Merganser Male and Female in slough
Sharp-shinned Hawk In cottonwood near weir
Common Snipe Flushed from weir edge
Virginia Rail Heard near snipe

The most surprising sighting was a male BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD at the north edge
of the "Interpretive Lot" (the parking lot at the east end of the nature
trail).

We have never before had a sighting in the nearly 7 month period of September
through the third week of March.

All told, we had 38 species. There is still about 9 inches of water over the
trail just before you get to the boardwalk, so if you head out there, wear tall
boots!
