When I stepped outside to come home from Mt. Vernon last night at about 6
PM it was very dark and foggy. I heard trumpeter swans overhead. When I
got home here in Stanwood, my family informed me that they had also heard
trumpeters overhead after dark in the fog. We don't usually hear them
after dark. I wonder if they were trapped up there above the fog, not able
to find their usual nighttime roosting areas. Or can they descend through
the fog by some amazing navigational ability, perhaps by communicating
with those on the ground? Can they stay up there all night? Or did we
have some Trumpeter mortality last night?
