Interesting question that has been asked twice this week by different
people.
Yes, trumpeter swans and many other birds for that matter can and do fly in
the fog. They vocalize more to keep track of each other and to find those
on the ground who may call back.
Hazardous as this may be, they still have to eat. Powerlines are a
major problem during these foggy periods, and sometimes trees. Eyesight in
these birds is much better than ours and they may be able to see shapes more
easily in lower light conditions than humans. Their navigation skills are
impaired abit, but they seem to be able to find the sloughs for roosting and
the good fields for feeding none-the-less.
