We made our annual trek down to Cottage Grove over
the Christmas weekend and, as is our tradition, we
counted raptors. Numbers seemed down from previous
years.

Counts between Portland and Cottage Grove

12/25 12/27
Red-tailed Hawk 22 20
Rough-legged Hawk 1
Bald Eagle 2
American Kestrel 14 11

We also had 27 Red-tails along the Columbia River
on 12/24 mostly between Longview and Portland along I-5
in Washington.

We came back (12/27) via Hwy 30 and Scapoose Bottoms where
we saw 2 SNOW GEESE in a flocks of CANADAS and at least
10 GREAT EGRETS. Also seen long Hwy 30 were 14 Red-tails,
6 American Kestrels, 1 Northern Harrier and a Sharp-
shinned Hawk.
