we were watching the ring-billed gulls this morning on lake sammamish
feeding on the chronomids, which are still hatching in good numbers. some
of the birds were setting on the surface, swimming around and picking up the
small hatching insects, however a good many of the birds were flying around
close to the wate in an eratic fashion. we watched them through the scope
and decided they were picking the adult insects out of the air much like a
swallow would do. in fact they reminded one of a big clumsy swallow.
