I note in the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North
America that the tiaga breeding race of the White-fronted
Goose is called Anser albifrons elgasi. (p.68)

Bellrose in his book, Ducks, Geese and Swans of North America, (pps.
110-111) refers to the Tule Goose (tiaga) race as Anser albifrons
gambelli. Sharing with the discovery of the breeding grounds of this
race with Daniel Timm were Warren Hancock and Bob Elgas. Bellrose said
that Timm, on several previous occasions, 1974-78, observed up to 1,000
adult "whitefronts" in the Redoubt Bay area where he as well as Elgas
and Hancock observed the race in 1979. Was the race name changed from
gambelli to elgasi to give credit to Bob Elgas and who was responsible
for the change? The AOU? If so, I'm rather curious as to the
rationale. Comments?.
