Date: Feb 5 16:08:08 1999
From: Jon. Anderson and Marty Chaney - festuca at olywa.net

Hi folks,

Got this from the Seabird-L list, and thought that perhaps someone
might be interested in the course opportunity. Remember, the birds
all look and talk 'funny' Out East.....

Please respond to Dr. Good, not to me.

The following course will be offered this summer at the Shoals Marine
Lab on Appledore Island, Maine. Appledore Island provides
opportunities for studying island breeding birds, landbird migration,
breeding landbirds and waterbirds. This course is truly unique in
providing opportunities for studying breeding ecology and behavior
of seabirds, particularly Herring and Great Black-backed Gulls, which
nest in abundance on the island and throughout the Isles of Shoals.

Introduction to Field Ornithology
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dates: May 24 - June 7, 1999
Semester Credits Earned: 2
Cost: $2,000.00
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PREREQUISITE: One full year of college level biology; background in
ornithology or vertebrate biology is recommended, but not required.

An introduction to the concepts and techniques of field ornithology
with an emphasis on the biology, ecology and behavior of the birds
of the Isles of Shoals. Appledore Island provides the perfect setting
for studying birds in the field; the Island is the summer home for
more than six species of wading and sea birds, and serves as a
spring and fall stopover site for over 100 species of migratory birds.
Gulls, eiders, herons, and warblers will be observed in a natural
setting exhibiting behaviors associated with territoriality, breeding
biology, and predator/prey interactions. Students will learn standard
field techniques, including visual and auditory identification, censusing,
territory mapping, and banding. Students will learn how to collect and
record data in a personal field notebook.

Enrollment is limited. For more information, call 607-255-3717 or visit
the Shoals Marine Lab web page at http://www.sml.cornell.edu
