Last night at midnight we went to the door, flicked on the
deck light, and looked out into the rain. We were surprised
to see a northern flying squirrel quietly eating sunflower
seeds on our platform feeder. It continued to feed while we
talked and examined it with our binoculars from ten feet
away. Then we briefly looked down at the Peterson mammal
book to read the description of flying squirrels; when we
looked up again it had vanished like a spectre in the night.

I am now wondering if the huge pile of dry moss I cleaned
out of our screech owl-sized nest box last spring was
bedding material for a flying squirrel. If so, I feel bad
for stealing his bed.
