Subject: eared grebes on Eld Inlet

Seen yesterday morning, from Frye Cove park, six (and possibly more) eared
grebes. They were a ways out on Eld Inlet, but through the scope, grey on
the front of the neck, and a thicker stripe on the nape were clearly seen.
A couple of horned grebes were closer to shore, for comparison.

The NGS fieldguide says that eared "Generally rides higher in the water
than horned grebe, exposing fluffy white undertail coverts." I've seen
horneds floating high enough in the water to show lots of undertail
coverts. Anyone have any comments as to how useful this is to distinguish
the two? Thanks,
