Subject: Long-eared Owl, Arlington

This afternoon at Portage Creek Wildlife Area in Arlington, I found a
Long-eared Owl sitting in a holly tree on the nature trail. I was about 10
feet from it when I first saw it. We looked at each other for about 5
seconds and then he flew off. It was about 7 feet off the ground and right
next to the trail. Out in the field there were 4 meadowlarks and 5
American pipits. Marsh wrens were singing, as was one Hutton's vireo.
