Columbia Estuary Report - 2/21/99

A collared DUSKY CANADA GOOSE #7.03 was at Brownsmead on Saturday.
Raptor numbers were surprisingly low in the area, but the GYRFALCON
was seen on the west side of Bug Hole Rd which is about a 1/4 mile
hop from Jackson Rd as the falcon flies.

In anticipation of soon to arrive hummingbirds, I put up my hummingbird
feeder. A female ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD appeared within hours of its
placement.

A search this morning of all the spots for early arrival migrants
produced nothing, but negative data is important.

There appears to be no oil on Clatsop Beaches yet and no dead
birds were found between Sunset Access and Gearhart approach.
270 SANDERLINGS and no DUNLIN suggests that the shorebird
migration may be gearing up.

In Herptile News, my neighbor Mary Chandler (the newt lady) went
out in search of amphibian eggs and found NORTHWESTERN SALAMANDER,
PACIFIC TREEFROG, AMERICAN BULLFROG and possibly RED-LEGGED FROG
eggs. TARICHA are on the march as well.
