Subject: A RED HEAD?

Hi,

Today I slogged my way along the power line trail adjacent to the Kent
Ponds.

I stalked a GREAT BLUE HERON with my binoculars, first spotting it
perched on a light pole above a wearhouse just south of the Ponds, and
getting within fifty feet from it, after it flew off from the pole;
landing on the trail a head of me.

But the bird that really got me curious was a duck. It looked like a
Red Head. There were two of them swimming together, so I assume they
were a pair. The non-flashy one looked like a female Red Head or Canvas
Back. Red Heads are more eastern birds, right?

I also spied some crows chasing after a red-tailed hawk, three pairs of
RING NECK DUCKS, PIED BILLED GREBE, WESTERN GREBE, many BUFFLEHEADS, two
female COMMON MERGANSERS, LESSER SCAUP and a gaggle or two of Canada
Geese, a few mallards, and a bunch of cute coot.

So, any idea what my mystery ducks were?

Thanks,
Lydia
