I birded up the Columbia Gorge with my wife today. The best bird that we
found was a PACIFIC LOON at the mouth of the Wind River, my first of this
species for Skamania County. We ran out of light at Bingen in Klickitat
County, the TUFTED DUCK wasn't at the waterfront in town and we didn't
have enough light to check up river where it was last seen. While pishing
for sparrows at Bingen Pond I upset a RING-NECKED PHEASANT that explode
from the marsh grass cackling as it went to the other side of the pond.
This bird's raucous call set of a VIRGINIA RAIL, always a good bird to
find this time of year in Klickitat County. Although we didn't leave home
until 1 p.m. we ended up with a total of 45 species.
