Subject: first New Year birds

I was awoken by the lovely sound of the neighborhood female red-shafted
flicker battling the starlings at the suet feeders. Later that day , while
in the garden ,I got to watch (unknown, too high) a flock of "navigationally
challenged" ducks flying from west to east across Capitol Hill. Or is this
a new migration route?
