Tweets & INlanders,

The Canyon Birders held its first ever Christmas Bird Count in the
Lewiston/Clarkston area. Preliminary results indicate we will have over 80
species for the count. Not too bad for a first year! Especially with the
usual first year organizational problems and a relatively low number of
counters. Hopefully this will become the baseline for future counts which
have a great potential. Here are a few highlights. I'll post the complete
count later in the week when I have all the numbers.

Double-crested Cormorant 8

16 waterfowl species including:
Ross's Goose 1 imm. at grain elevators in AM
Common Goldeneye 1000
Barrow's Goldeneye 800
Bufflehead 350
Oldsquaw 1 adult basic male

most of the divers along the Snake and Clearwater in the area appear to
spend the night at the grain elevators along the Clearwater in Lewiston.
This allows an approx. maximum count to be obtained in the evening as they
come in to roost.

Merlin 1
Virginia Rail
Barn Owl 8
Northern Pygmy-Owl
Northern Saw-whet Owl
Long-eared Owl
Marsh Wren 1
Canyon Wren 1
Bewick's Wren 20+
American Dipper
Harris' Sparrow 1 1st winter

A possible Golden-crowned Sparrow was seen the day before in the same
general area as the Harris' Sparrow which was with a large flock of
White-crowned Sparrow in Hell's Gate State Park near the lower end of
Tammany Creek and the Visitor's Center. The Long-eared and Northern Saw-whet
owls were also in Hell's Gate SP.

Thanks, Charles.
