Hi Tweets,

The Everett, WA, CBC in brief:

Weather was a bit blustery, with light rain in the afternoon.
118 species, three below our recent norm.
33,831 individuals.

Highlights included a REDHEAD in Everett and 2 LONG-EARED OWLS in
Marysville. Eight species of shorebird were an exceptional total for us
(KILDEER, BB PLOVER, SNIPE, DOWITCHER, YELLOWLEGS, DUNLIN, SANDERLING AND
*160* W. SANDPIPER).

Duck numbers were high, all three blackbird species were in very high
numbers. We set a count record for RB SAPSUCKER with seven, but otherwise
dickeybird numbers were down fairly drastically, maybe 30% on average.
It's not clear to me how much of that broad downturn was related to count
day weather. Some species were obviously just not around in normal
numbers (RB Nuthatch, 1 seen, we're normally in double digits, CB
Chickadee, 11 seen, normally closer to 100). But the across the board
"declines" in about 15 more species of small songbird may have been due to
the birds staying under cover. Or perhaps it was due to the hard freeze
we experienced in early December. I'd be interested to hear from other
Puget Trough compilers about this - did you note any downturn in sparrows,
chickadees, wrens, kinglets and woodpeckers? Or did we just pick a slow
day to go birding?
