Thanks for all the input! There were about 3-4 of each grebe (EARED
and HORNED) and dang they each looked just like the picture--which
is the way I like it! (I know there are lots of variations on a
theme within species and will start enjoying those once I'm more
comfortable with the main melodies.)

The Horned seemed a bit smaller, and the bill was certainly
smaller, than the Eared. The white on the neck extended up both
sides, farther and clearer than the Eared. The Horned were right
by the dock so I could see them clearly from all sides. The
Eared were further out, but not by much; never farther than the
end of the rocky breakwater they've built out there.

Also the mergansers were RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS not the
common ones; I remembered that when I was at work. And there
was just one pair of the COMMON GOLDENEYE; I'm sorry if I
implied there were bunches. The spot was roundish and didn't
extend towards the eye, and the white on the sides were like
slashes and didn't have the spots I've seen on the BARROW'S.
(Dang, I'm going to have to learn those feather terms pretty
soons. It's spelled out in my books; I've just been lazy.)

And sorry about the non-ID; I am so used to email at work
that carries my full name that I forget! But I am...
