Hello, this is the Audubon Society of Portland Rare Bird Report. This
recording was made Thursday January 7. If you have anything to add call
Harry Nehls at 233-3976.

The southeast Portland BRAMBLING continues to be seen. Recently it has
moved farther south and on January 6 was found near 9th. and Tenino
Streets. This is south of Tacoma Street which leads to the Sellwood
Bridge. The bird still moves around with large flocks of Robins and
Juncos.

The ARCTIC LOON was seen again January 2 on Blind Slough at Brownsmead,
east of Astoria. There appears to be a concentration of food in the
slough that has attracted many loons and grebes.

On January 3 a loudly calling NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH was found along the
west dike of the Warrenton Sewage Ponds.

An EASTERN PHOEBE was found December 30 at a farm at milepost 9 along the
North Bank Road in the Coquille Valley. A BLACK PHOEBE is in the same
area. Both continue to be seen.

A large gray GYRFALCON was seen December 31 east of Joseph in northeast
Oregon. It was found along Dobbins Road where it crosses Prairie Creek.

The January 2 Coquille Valley Christmas Count found high numbers of many
species. Besides the EASTERN PHOEBE there were a late YELLOWTHROAT, two
BARN SWALLOWS, and a SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER. Two BROWN PELICANS and three
GLAUCOUS GULLS were also recorded. Up to four TREE SWALLOWS continue to
be seen on the North Spit of Coos Bay.

A TURKEY VULTURE, four BROWN PELICANS, and a SCRUB-JAY were on the
January 2 Yaquina Bay Count. Five ROCK SANDPIPERS were at Depoe Bay
January 1.

The MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD along Marine Drive at the Portland Airport was seen
again January 2. On January 6 a BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER was with a
goup of Townsend's and Yellow-rumped Warblers bathing in a fountain in
Holiday Park near the Lloyd Center in northeast Portland. On January 3
two WHITE PELICANS were seen in the Scholls area, south of Hillsboro.
They could not be relocated.

An OSPREY is again wintering at the Indian Springs Fish hatchery along
Springwater Road east of Oregon City. Another is along the Santiam River
near Stayton. Wintering GREEN HERONS were reported near Grand Ronde and
near Silverton. Single PRAIRIE FALCONS were reported during the week from
near Silverton, near Halsey, and near Eugene.

The MOCKINGBIRD continues to be seen near 513 Witham Drive in Corvallis.
An immature ROSS'S GOOSE was at Finley NWR January 3.

The January 3 Eugene Count located the three TURKEY VULTURES and two
WHITE PELICANS that are wintering in the area, as well as a TREE SWALLOW
and a HARRIS'S SPARROW. On January 6 a male TRICOLORED BLACKBIRD was
spotted in a large blackbird flock in the Fisher Butte Unit of Fern Ridge
Reservoir. Two RED-SHOUDLERED HAWKS are now in the east Coyote Unit of
Fern Ridge south of the highway.

A PACIFIC LOON was at the mouth of Wind River in the Columbia River Gorge
December 31. On January 2 a RED-THROATED LOON was below the John Day Dam.

NORTHERN HARRIERS have been very common in Oregon this winter, but the
245 found on the Umatilla County Count was outstanding.

Observers on the December 31 Hart Mountain Count found a flock of 90
BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS among a swarm of other birds in the conifers at Blue
Sky on Hart mountain.

Thats it for this week.
