Last winter at high tide at Alki, south of the Lighthouse I got a great view
of an eared grebe while it hunted under the water. It was amazing to watch
how quickly it could change direction and depth. The funniest moment was
when it came up for air, it broke the surface with a pop that sounded like a
champange cork! I can tell eared from horned it the winter by they way they
"ride" in the water, eared's float higher up, like an unloaded boat, while
horned's "ride"lower, as if the "boat" had cargo onboard. Also, the eared
(viewed from the back), look to me like a child wearing a VERY large white
diaper ,,,,
