I've had the "cold from hell" since about Dec. 30th so I really haven't
had much of a chance to look around there, but I did today, walking from
just N of the Marina building to A pier and back. Grebe-wise there were
about 8 Horned Grebes and 6 Red-necked Grebes. Those are pretty big
numbers for such a small area given the observations of past years,
there's never been a large number of birds at the Marina. There were
maybe 30 Barrow's Goldeneyes and 4 Common with more just out of range for
a good ID, a pair of Hooded Mergansers were swimming near the guest
piers, really close to the sidewalk. I never tire of Hooded Mergansers.
(Yesterday at the pond there was one male and three female, but I didn't
make it that far today.) An adult Bald Eagle was perched on the same
broken sign on the breakwater with 6 Kildeer-like birds standing on the
rocks nearby. The highlight though was two Common Loons, one just off the
A pier, only 20 feet away. Three female Red-necked Mergansers, and a
female Common as well as coots and gulls, and a Great Blue Heron on the D
pier herring pen.
