Re: previous post on Eared Grebes at Golden Gardens:
I wrote: "The coloring was white front, grayish
neck & head with a bit of white on the sides. There
wasn't enough white under the chin and around the side
to seem like a red-necked. And the head did look big
for the body."
Y'all responded:
Scott Richardson: "Study the beaks. Red-neckeds have
quite a bit of yellow on a medium-sized beak. Horneds,
at close range, show an ivory tip. Eareds have dainty beaks."
Gene Hunn: "Sounds to me like Horned and Red-necked Grebes."

Went back today, and I think you are absolutely right: those
Bills are pretty big, straight and yellow (as long as the
Head is wide) and they are most likely red-necks. Also saw
A big ole harbor seal nosing in towards the boats to cruise
For leftovers; after a bit I saw him coming out from the
Docks, then I lost him for good. Beautiful great blue
Heron flew all the way around the end of the dock, twice,
Looking for the best fishing spot. Also think I saw a
Few SURF SCOTERS, with the males having the white patches
Behind the head and above the beak, and the females
Pretty dark. They were beyond the breakwater so not
A lot of detail but that white was pretty clear. Is
That a reasonable sighting for that area? (See, I'm
Learnin'!)
