Hi,

It was probably a Golden-crowned kinglet that you saw. They are quite
common at Shoreview. What is really cool, is when the males flare the
spot on their crest's! Anna's hummingbirds are also very reliable at
Shoreview. Monday of last week, I counted 5. There was a male that sat
right in front of me at a distance of about 5 or 6 feet, at eye level. I
never realized how colorful they really are! I remember very few times
that I have not seen one at Shoreview.

Vireos?!? Could these have been Ruby-crowned kinglets? They don't show
the ruby crown very often. I have seen Hutton's vireos on this hill
before, but any type of vireo at this time of year would certainly be
unusual (though far from unheard of). Most Cassin's vireos (Solitary was
split into three forms, Cassin's is the one that lives around here) are
considered strictly breeding birds around here, aren't they?

Shoreview can turn up a surprising variety of birds. Since I started
going there in July, (add one trip with Jason Starfire in April to that)
I have seen over 70 species there. Not bad, at least I think it is
pretty good. BTW, when I checked Hidden Lake at Shoreview on Friday
morning, there were both Goldeneye's, a Ring-necked Duck, lots of
Bufflehead, a few mallards, and a single Common Loon!?!
