I might add to the remarkably complete accumulation of information and
advice:
The Peterson's Western Bird Song CD has been (maybe temporarily) out of
print for several months. If you want one, and know somebody who has it in
stock, get it quick. I've been out of stock for several months, as has the
ABA. (The Eastern is quickly running out.)
Houghton Mifflin has said they will "repackage" and "re-publish" the CDs
in the "first quarter 99." However, knowing how such schedules and plans
work out, I really wonder if we will ever see them in their prior form.
The Stoke's Eastern CD set is excellent, however with the unfortunate
breaking of a group of similar birds at a CD change. (It never occurred to
them that that's a problem!)
I anxiously await the Stoke's Western set. It is being done mostly by
Kevin Colver, who I know to do good work.
If you have an interest in AviSys Song software (which drives and controls
the Peterson's CDs), here are my thoughts as to its future:
If both Peterson CDs are republished, there will be a complete re-write
of Song.
If the Stoke's Western CD is published, there will be a complete re-write
of Song to include both Stoke's CDs, plus Peterson's if they are available.
If either of the Peterson's CDs aren't re-published, or the Stoke's
Western doesn't materialize, Song will be retired.
For those who have purchased Song in the last several months and received
a draft (instead of bound) user's guide, if Song is re-written with
new function, you will receive a new bound replacement user's guide and an
update diskette. If Song is not re-written, I will have the original Song
manuals reprinted in sufficient volume to send each of you a copy.
