Just about 25 years ago, on a cold autumn afternoon, my family was driving
south from Orono, Maine, when I started noticing birds alongside the roadway.
They were many, all listless or dead.

Scarlet Tanagers.

I'm fairly certain (might have been a newspaper report found by my parents)
they were under the influence of fermented berries.
