Dear Tweeters,

On Monday, February 1, Gene Hunn will be presenting a slide show on Oaxaca,
Mexico. The State of Oaxaca (pronounced wa-Ha-ca) is located in the
southwest portion of Mexico with a portion extending onto the Caribbean side
of the mountains. It is a wonderful place to bird and culturally very rich.
The people in the Valley of Oaxaca are surrounded by mountains, which kept
them isolated from the rest of Mexico until recently. Despite 300 years of
Spanish occupation, a large proportion of the population are pure Indian and
speak one of dozens of languages, the most common dialects being Mixtec and
Zapotec. This state has many ruins to explore, weavings to peruse, famous
black pottery to admire and the wild colored dream animals to ponder. The
show will be a mixture of habitat, ruins, birds and places to bird in
Oaxaca.

The program is held at the Center for Urban Horticulture on the U of WA
campus and is open to all. The social begins at 7:00pm and the program
starts at 7:30pm.

Good Birding,
President of WOS
