Thanks to Scott and Gene for trying to verify my Lewis woodpecker
sighting. For anyone else who might be out in Seward Park, I neglected to
mention that the bird was toward the far end of the tennis courts and I
believe it headed in the direction of the nearby houses when it
disappeared. I was actually watching the sandpiper when I noticed it had
left, but I think I would have noticed if it had flown my direction (toward
the park). Of course, it could be anywhere.
I said that I couldn't make out the collar or pink belly. The lighting was
not great (overcast), so they may not have shown up well, but the bird
actually looked a lot like the picture of the juvenile in the NatGeo guide
(no collar, indistinct belly, no red face) except that it had the red face
of the adult. Does anyone know whether this could be transitional plumage
between the juvenile and adult forms? (sorry I still don't have the plumage
terminology down.) Thanks.
