As a final note regarding the status of the Imperial Ivorybill, Howell &
Webb in "A Guide to the Birds of Mexico, etc." state that this species is
"presumed extinct" and "Demise apparently due to hunting by humans for
food, in combination with habitat loss". So I guess my earlier field-based
speculations were so far off...
