In Hawaii 29 species of birds are classified as endangered - 40% of all
the birds in the U.S. 1 as threatened. A total of 24 species of Hawaiian
birds have become extinct since l825. That coupled with those listed as
endangered and threatened total over 75% of the endemic birds of Hawaii
have become extinct or threatened with extinction. The worst record of
any spot in the entire world! The only 2 native mammals are likewise
endangered. Oh, yes, for you botanists, 263 plants in that state are
endangered or threatened with more coming on the line continually.
Hawaii is called the Endangered Species Capital of the World.
