Hi Pat

I would think that the best book is Howell and Webb's
"A Guide to the Birds of Mexico and Northern Central
America". Not quite a pocket book and not inexpensive
but probably 'the' reference for a few years to come.
It is very well done, good illustrations, range maps, etc.

Flora and Fauna in Seattle carry it. You could give
them a call for price.

I envy her for some of the birds she is seeing!!!
