This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

The first Lewiston, Idaho / Clarkston, Washington CBC netted over 80
species. Not bad for a first go. Some of the best birds were an
adult male OLDSQUAW in the huge raft of ducks next to the grain
terminal on the Clearwater River. The raft can be viewed with
spotting scopes from the levee park system along the south side of the
river along the US 12 bypass around downtown Lewiston. At the grain
terminals themselves was a single ROSS'S GOOSE. At Hell's Gate State
Park, just south of Lewiston along the Snake River, birders' found a
LONG-EARED OWL, a NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL and BARN OWL in the evergreens
around the picnic / beach area. Also look for the adult HARRIS'S
SPARROW in the weedy, dry impoundments between the marina and the
picnic / beach area. The Harris's was seen again on January 6 by
Charles Swift. ID DeLorme 54, A-1.

A single RED-BREASTED MERGANSER was seen on the Spirit Lake, Kootenai
County, Idaho CBC on January 3 by Kris and Ed Buchler. It was seen
off the boat docks at Bayview on Lake Pend Oreille. ID DeLorme 60,
A-2.

There are some good gulls in the region. Jeff Wisman saw an adult MEW
GULL in Riverfront Park in downtown Spokane, Washington on January 3.
WA DeLorme 89, C-5.

In northern Idaho, Marty Collar reports a single adult GLAUCOUS GULL
at Fighting Creek Landfill, about 14 miles south of Coeur d'Alene,
Kootenai County, Idaho during the end of December. The entrance is at
US 95 milepost 415.4. Make sure you ask permission at the office. ID
DeLorme 60, BC-1 and A Birders's Guide to Idaho p. 52.

Near Sandpoint, Bonner County, Idaho during the end of December, Marty
also had 1 or 2 first winter GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULLS off of Sunnyside
Road east of Sandpoint. Sunnside heads south off Idaho 200 at
milepost 35, a couple miles east of the jct of US 95 and Idaho 200. ID
DeLorme 62, BC-3 and A Birders's Guide to Idaho p. 34. Another
OLDSQUAW was seen about 1.5 miles west of Hope, Bonner County, Idaho
along Idaho 200 by Marty during the end of December.

In Umatilla County, Oregon on January 7, Mike and MerryLynn Denny
found 11 MOUNTAIN QUAIL just south of Ukiah near the mouth of Camas
Creek. Take US 395 south from Ukiah. Just before crossing Camas
Creek, turn onto River Road on the north side of the North Fork John
Day River. The birds were 1.6 miles up the road.

A gray-morph GYRFALCON was seen Dec 31 near Joseph, Wallowa County,
Oregon by Mike and MerryLynn Denny. To get the location, take the
road to Imnaha east out of Joseph. Turn north on Dobbins Road. As
Dobbins makes a sharp, 90 degree right turn, a Rancho Road continues
straight. The bird was seen along Rancho. OR DeLorme 87, C-7.5.

Good birding.
