Returning from a soggy and somewhat disappointing trip to Westport and
Tokeland on Friday, I stopped at the Raymond Airport during a brief respite
in the rain. There were not a lot of birds, here either, but while looking
at a Red-tail in the scope, I turned to find myself staring at a large herd
of Elk about 50 yards to the North. They were watching me intently and had
the tight formation look of Wildebeest on the plains of Africa. As I
watched they took off running, and jumping over a decrepit fence in the
field. On my way out, I got some good pictures of them in a field together
with some cows, but they were very tense, retaining their tight formation.
I estimated that there were about 60 or 70 animals in the herd.
