Tweeters,

A couple of ideas for making 'attracting' recordings (I won't repeat
the caveats about responsible use!). If you have a CD player on your
PC (as most now do) you can create a .wav file by recording
calls/songs off any bird CD (Peterson's Western Birds for example)
using the recording utilities that come w/ Windows 95. You can then
view the .wav files with a wav editor (also comes w/ Windows 95 etc.)
and cut and paste the calls to create long series of calls. Then
connect a tape deck to your sound card using a patch cord and record
the .wav files (play on the computer, record on the tape deck). This
is especially useful for making long owl series - especially of
multiple species. This sounds a bit complicated but is not that hard
to setup and creates excellent recordings (& in the long run is easier
than continually playing/recording from CD to tape). PLay with the
recording levels and use high quality tapes for best results. Any MAC
or PC w/ a CD player and sound card should be able to so this. Sound
recording & editing utilities come w/ most current operating systems
or can be downloaded from the internet.

Making your own CDs: the ultimate! CD recorders for PCs are now in a
reasonable cost range (several hundred $$). One could create their own
custom CDs of bird songs/calls then use them in the field w/ a
portable CD player and small powered speakers. With 1 CD one could
select the desired bird call/song by jumping to the specific track on
the CD. No more switching tapes and rewinding! I'm going to try this
as soon as I have some time as I have access to a CD burner at work.
I'll report back on my success.

Thanks, Charles.
