Bird tapes for individual species or groups of species can be obtained
from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Generally these are prepared for
individuals conducting research. I once had tapes of the eastern rails
and eastern owls. Lost the tapes with the tape player. Used them
mainly to identify calls I did not recognize, but on some occasions to
call in species like on owling field trips, CBC's or doing Atlas work.
I'm not sure what effect tape playing has on birds, but I don't think we
should use tapes without good cause. I just prefer not to take chances.
