Today the Seattle Post Intelligencer has raptors featured in their
"Weekend" magazine. The full page cover of the several page weekend
inset is of a peregrine falcon taken near Mount Vernon. There is a very
fine two page article entitled Raptor Paradise by Greg Johnston that
liberally quotes Bud Anderson and has discriptions of various raptors and
suggested locations of where to see them.

Surprisingly, the article, while it does mention "eagles", virtually skips
this most recognizable of raptors and focuses on hawks, falcons and owls.
There is a great picture of a snowy owl and pictures of a merlin, a
northern harrier and a large picture of bird watchers with faces obscured
by binoculars. While we may be good at identification, we're such a shy
and retiring group when it comes to being indentified & photographed!

Is it just my impression or have the number of bird-related articles in
the popular press increased? Articles such as this go a long way toward
increasing the awareness and appreciation of birds and other wildlife.
