Thursday, January 28

A report was received that the CATTLE EGRET first reported late last
fall was seen very recently near Lombard Drive in Metchosin.
Confirmation of this sighting would be appreciated.


Wednesday, January 27

2 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, rare here in the winter, were seen at the head of a
slough which comes up to Marina Way in Sidney. The slough head is about
100 meters up Marina Way which runs off MacDonald Park Road.

The female AMERICAN KESTREL was again seen at the north end of the
Victoria Airport along Mills Road. It seems to favour the north and
northeast areas of the airport.


Tuesday, January 26

6 BLACK SCOTERS were off Island View Beach Park north of the boat
launching ramp.


Monday, January 25

A male REDHEAD was on the Gorge near Gorgeview Drive.

2 male REDHEADS were with 60 CANVASBACKS at the northeast end of Elk
Lake.


Sunday, January 24

17 CEDAR WAXWINGS were near the Tuesday Pond at Swan Lake Nature
Sanctuary in Saanich.

The NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was still at the entrance to Tower Point Park
on Olympicview Drive in Metchosin.

A SAY'S PHOEBE continues it's flycatching activities around the Goodyear
Tire store and the Trans-Isle Truck Repair Shop. Both these facilities
are located approximately 2 1/2 miles north of Duncan on highway 1, just
north of the weigh station.

An adult GOLDEN EAGLE was seen flying with BALD EAGLES over Mays Road
where the large power lines cross that road. Mays Road is just north of
where the SAY'S PHOEBE is located going east from highway 1.

At Cowichan Bay near the south dike was a SHORT-EARED OWL.

A falcon thought to be the dark morph GYRFALCON was seen there as well.
Confirmation of this species is requested. The south dike entry point
is near the campground at Cowichan Bay.

A NORTHERN SHRIKE was along the north dike at Cowichan Bay.

A BARRED OWL was at Cuthbert Holmes Park.

BARRED OWLS were also seen in Beacon Hill Park behind the grandstand,
and are also located in Doumac Park in Cordova Bay.

6 RUDDY DUCKS were at Viaduct Flats with an assortment of other duck
species.

2 adult and 1 immature TUNDRA SWAN were with TRUMPETER SWANS in a field
east of Hunt Road just south of Dooley Road.

28 WHITE FRONTED GEESE were at Martindale Flats.

The immature HARRIS' SPARROW and the adult WHITE-THROATED SPARROW
continue their presence near the corner of Martindale Road and Lochside
Trail in a mixed group of sparrows.

A GREATER YELLOWLEGS, hard to find so far this year, was at Loon Bay
which is near the Royal Victoria Yacht Club in Oak Bay.

PINE GROSBEAKS were again seen and heard near the entrance to
Observatory Hill on West Saanich Road.

2 WHIMBRELS were at Cattle Point and 1 on islands off the Victoria Golf
Course.

A late report of a SPOTTED SANDPIPER seen Thursday, January 21 behind
the Royal Roads University rowing building off Esquimalt Lagoon.

Also, a late report of 2 BROWN PELICANS seen as late as January 14 off
Pedder Bay in Metchosin.
