On Friday, Jan. 29, as observed from Dash Pt. Dock - this is south of
Dash Pt. State Park - I watched a very light grayish loon as it fed along
the water line, rarely diving. It rode low in the water with an upturned
bill but with no i.d. markings or color. Because it was far south of me
towards Brown's Pt. and, of course, my scope was in the trunk of the car, I
thought it was a Red-throated Loon. However, viewing it yesterday at David
Adams and somewhat closer, it was still confusing with no discernible
markings. It often brought one foot out of the water, seeming to scratch
its back. Its lower mandible showed a slight upturned bill; it probably had
to be a Common Loon. Very strange sight! Thais Bock
