Columbia Estuary Report - 01/31/99

One would have thought that 36 hours of 40+ kt winds would have left something
more interesting on Clatsop beach. I followed a pair of BALD EAGLES
along the
beach and they were able to show me a dead BRANDT'S CORMORANT and a dead
WESTERN GREBE. A nice adult _anatum_ PEREGRINE was also seen.

A female WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was in the middle of the campground road at FT
Stevens. I picked it up (it was pretty throughly exhausted) and
released it
in the ponds west of Battery Russell.

A EURASIAN WIGEON was with AMERICAN WIGEON in the pasture behind the fairgrounds
on the Waluski River (DeLorme pg 70 c3). And is it just me or do there seem
to be LOTS of GADWALL around this year?
