Yesterday, July 3, Marv Breece and I found two female Blue Grouse with
chicks (one with one quite small chick, the other with three somewhat
larger ones but less than half grown), in the North Fork Snoqualmie
drainage north of North Bend. Both were at the 500-600 meter elevation
range. A little higher up, on the shaded north side of a ridge, we ran
into a deep snowbank. The buds on nearby brushy vegetation were just
breaking, the first shoots of herbaceous perennials were emerging from the
bare ground, and a Blue Grouse hooted somewhere out in the young
Douglas-firs.
