Four of us spent this glorious morning inspecting the area around Hazel's
wetland on the plateau. Reminded me of the Vienna Woods, only the trails
aren't as nice. The area struck me as a perfect place for hearing-ear
birders to go - to practice their expertise. The mixed woods were loaded
with birdsong, but the understory is so dense we couldn't see the birds.
Near the big pond we did find a few House Finches and Goldfinches, one
Mallard hen, and lots of Cedar Waxwings feeding on the red huckleberries. A
beautiful orange-yellow pond-lilly, just off the dock overlook, was worth the
trip. We'll be back.
