July 13, 1999, 8:13 p.m. Hello, this is Kraig Kemper,
206-789-9255, with a late report for Friday July 9th and
Saturday July 10th. On Friday July 9th on our way to bird
Klickitat County, Kathy Kemper and I stopped in Thurston
County at Weir Prairie northwest of the town of Rainier and
not only heard but were able to observe NORTHERN
BOBWHITE. Later that morning in Klickitat County, near
the intersection of Balch Road and Old Highway 8, we
observed two ACORN WOODPECKER fly-catching and
nearby one ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER. Two
additional ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER were
observed at the Lyle Balch Cemetary off of Balch Road.
Again, later that monring, on the Lyle Centerville Road, we
located one LESSER GOLDFINCH. On the morning of
Saturday July 10th in Klickitat County, at Conboy Lake
National Wildlife Refuge, we located one pair of
WHITE-HEADED WOODPECKER and observed one
pair of SANDHILL CRANE. Thank you.

July 12,1999, 6:30 a.m. Hi, this is Gene Revelas in Tacoma
253-756-7834. Yesterday Rick Romea and I went up to
the Mt. Hardy burn, following up on the WOS trip from last
weekend led by Steve Mlodinow and Kraig Kemper. The
burn is located at Milepost 153, uphill from Milepost 153 on
20, far east in Skagit County. We had the two
MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS and DUSKY
FLYCATCHER. We did not relocate the THREE-TOED
WOODPECKER, but we did have a female
BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER, right in the
southeast corner of the burn, right when you break out of the
woods. That's it. Good birding.

July 11, 1999, 8:28 a.m. Hi, this is Stephen Mlodinow.
Yesterday, I had a TUFTED PUFFIN off of Cultus Bay on
Whidbey Island looking out towards Possession Bar. It was
in with a large group of RHINO AUKLETS. Also, there
was the usual early July scattering of SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPERS, with two at Cultus Bay, three at Crockett
Lake and one northwest of Silvana in Snohomish County on
28th Avenue north of Norman. I also had my first
HEERMANN'S GULLS of the year with about 20 or more
near Port Townsend from the ferry. Also there was one on
Whidbey Island near Swantown. That's it. Good luck and

July 8, 1999, 11:16 a.m. Hi, this is Greg Toffic with a report
on the status of the HOODED CRANE which escaped from
the zoo a couple of nights ago. It was recaptured last night
and is back in our custody. Thank you.

July 7, 1999, 2:05 p.m. Hi, this is Greg Toffic from
Woodland Park Zoo calling back again regarding the
escaped HOODED CRANE, which you'll hear in a
subsequent message. If you happen to see this bird after our
normal business hours, after, well, say 5 o'clock, will you
please report it by paging our night keeper at 982-4514.

July 7, 1999, 12:37 p.m. Hi, this is Greg Toffic from
Woodland Park Zoo, 206-684-4836. I'm asking for some
help. We had a HOODED CRANE escape from the zoo
yesterday sometime -- last evening. And it was reported by
a neighbor at 62nd and Fremont. We haven't been able to
locate this bird yet. If anyone in that area happens to find this
bird, which is superficially like -- it resembles a SANDHILL
CRANE, please call me or call the zoo at 206-684-4040.

July 4, 1999, 4:27 p.m. Hi, this is Stephen Mlodinow.
Yesterday and today, we had a WOS field trip to Whidbey
Island and some of the higher areas of Skagit County led by
Kraig Kemper and myself. Other participants were Steve
Pink, Jim Flynn, Sam Perry, Greg Toffic, Sally Toffic, and
Dennis Duffy. On Whidbey Island yesterday, we had 14
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS at Crockett Lake.
There were two RED-NECKED PHALAROPES and a
WHIMBREL still there. In the Swantown area, there were
23 PACIFIC LOONS, including two that showed rather
extensive white on the flanks. They were however
PACIFICS not ARCTICS. See the April 1997 Birding for
details on ARCTIC-PACIFIC LOON separation. Today at
Mt. Hardy burn, we had a THREE-TOED
WOODPECKER, two MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS, a
DUSKY FLYCATCHER. At the Easy Pass trailhead, we
had a RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER. At the Whatcom
Countyline Ponds, just about a mile into Whatcom County
heading from Skagit, we had four or more VEERY,
including one that seemed to be carrying food, and a LEAST
FLYCATCHER. Three NIGHTHAWKS were overhead.
At the Skagit Countyline Ponds, which are just before you
get to Whatcom County, there was an AMERICAN
REDSTART singing, and at the Corkindale Creek Crossing,
there was two EASTERN KINGBIRDS and six BANK
SWALLOWS. That's it. Good luck and good birding.

July 4, 1999, 8:14 a.m. Hi, Tom Aversa, 782-7342. Birded
Montlake Fill this morning. Included 15 LEAST and one
WESTERN SANDPIPER, at least two LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, an AMERICAN BITTERN, and a
summering BUFFLEHEAD.

July 1st , 1999, 3:18 p.m. Hi, this is Terry Eggers.
206-243-3936. Spotted a WHOOPING CRANE in the
Kent Valley, approximately one mile north of Emerald
Downs. It took off within 20 feet of the car and flew right
over the top of the car, so it was an unusual sight. That was
about 11 o'clock on 6/30, the last day of the month. Thanks
