In just returned from a three day camping/fishing trip at the grass
airstrip at Pelican Point, on Owhyee Reservoir in far Eastern Oregon.
Although this little peninsula has only a few dozen trees there were a
good number of birds present. A small island off of the southern side of
the point has nesting DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS and possibly
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS, there was a considerable bit of noise coming
from the trees there. We watched a Packrat come limping from out from
under the sheet metal cabin with a nearly four foot long rattlesnake
following the heat or scent trail. We would have liked to watch the end
of this hunt but thought better of it when hunter and prey went into a
thick patch of weeds. The pilots that use this remote dirt strip seem to
consider it as a mascot and leave this snake alone, and mention is made
of it in the guest book in the cabin. I don't know if this area was
included in the Atlas project so a complete bird list is below.
