May 23rd is the last day that the Red-breasted Sapsucker rhythmically pounded
on the rainwater downspout on my house. It used the same spot each time.
Most of the time it arrived between 5:15 a.m. and 7:15 a.m. I didn't hear it
every day but it was over a period of 64 days that this bird served as my
alarm clock, even though I don't use one. I rather miss leaning out the
second story window and saying "hello" to this handsome bird.
