(from the ABA--sorry I originally said Cornell) point out that just in the
state of Virginia cat-killed birds are calculated to be 26 million! per year
(Mitchell, 1992). In Wisconsin, free-ranging rural cats kill an estimated
39 million birds per year. The article goes on to say that with over forty
million "owned" cats let outdoors, and an estimated sixty million stray and
feral cats also free to kill birds, the problem is enormous (to say the
least). Worldwide, cats have been involved in the extinction of more bird
species than any other cause except habitat destruction. Education is a
must if we are to prevent these unacceptable numbers.
