The content of a letter I sent to Tweeters last evening describing the
vocalization of a bird was apparently offensive to some. I described the
intensity (loudness) of the call as resembling that of a woman trying to get
the attention of someone across a room. What I was trying to say was that
the pitch (frequency) of the call resembled that of a woman and that the
intensity (loudness) was somewhere between normal conversational speech and
yelling. Perhaps that of a teacher calling out to a student.

I deeply regret the apparent insensitivity of my description and see clearly
that it was sexist and in bad taste. I sincerely hope that I may be
forgiven for such indefensible and inappropriate language.
