I have a pair of Cobra 'family band' radios (the pair sells for ~ 75$). This
is a new UHF band. The radios have a range of about 2 miles, work well in
cars, and are very compact (fit in your shirt pocket). Recently, we went a
three day weekend (12 hour days) on a single set of batteries, and you can
buy a charger (more than the cost of the radios!). I'm sure you can get
better quality and range, but these work great for field trips in multiple
cars...

I haven't tried any other types of radios, so I'm not really recommending
mine, but I can say that using them is more fun than you might think!
