In the past week or so I've noticed something that I don't recall having
seen before in thirty years of watching here: the overlap of flying bats
(little ones) and swallows (mostly Violet-green). In previous years there's
always been a hiatus of at least five minutes, and usually more, between
bedtime for swallows and the appearance of bats. I've no idea if the
swallows are staying out later, the bats are appearing earlier, or both.
Could it be that they've both got to work longer with continued cool weather
(central Seattle) than in a more normal spring, to catch the insects they
need?
